Collection: Other Ancients

Constantinople founded in 330 A.D by emperor Constantine, formerly Byzantium, became the new capital dethroning the Roman empire with immediate effect. This change occurred to better centre the focal point of the Empire, as the Eastern section became even more important. The Byzantine empire had a fantastic run until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453 A.D, conveniently a staggering 2100 years after 753 B.C, the date Rome was founded. Moving on to things more numismatic, although the period had comparatively simplistic portraits, they still had a vast selection of coinage which maintained a status as a strong and stable currency, whilst also continuing the Christian iconography introduced by its founder.

Here you will find our Byzantine coins and the coins that slipped through the cracks of the categories laid out in our home page.
